First Place - "Embrace" by Albert Rhea

The theme for the Fall Art Show was "Ancestral Connections". The art was to reflect something of the artist's own ancestry, an ancient interpretation of how and where life originated, a connection to something from the past, or something more current that reminded the artist of their mom or someone from the past.

The show of 80 pieces of art entered by 51 artists was judged by Ron Sykes. He spent about one and a half hours deciding on the winners.

Judge Ron Sykes Biography

Ron Sykes received his B.S. in art education and his M.S. in art from Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kansas. He taught art in public school systems in Kansas and Omaha for over 30 years, retiring in 2002. Mr. Sykes has since taught art classes at Joslyn and Metro Community College, and was a member of the Artists Cooperative Gallery for several years. His main focus has been to find ways to increase perceptual abilities in his students, by using the right hemisphere of the brain. These specific lessons help to increase drawing accuracy and creativity.

presenting joy long award

Joy Long's daughter, Carolyn White, with Mary Ann Grace, the first recipient of the Joy Long Art Award.

Joy Long was a member of Omaha Artists Inc. for many, many years and was a talented artist winning awards in various media, including oil and watercolor. But her main focus in recent years was pastel. Her wonderful effects with focus on “light and atmosphere” made her artwork stand out. Joy won Best Water-color at our Lauritzen Garden art show just last spring. She passed away this past summer, and her bright and cheery personality will be missed. Joy’s family has been gracious enough to make an ongoing award in Joy’s name. They would like it to be awarded to an artist for “excellence in expressing light and atmosphere in the artist’s chosen medium”. This is a $50.00 cash prize and the first one will be awarded at the “Ancestral Connections” fall art show reception at the Hot Shops, November 9 from 2-4 pm. We are very thankful to Roy Long and his family for this ongoing memorial.
