Susan Stevens IMG 2110

Susan Stevens the winner of the Omaha Artists Inc Memorial Scholarship is sharing her experience of the Susan Crouch Watercolor Workshop she attended in West Jefferson, North Carolina last July.

Susan chose this workshop because she admired how Susan Crouch’s paintings glow with light, bright colors and the way she interprets her subjects. She wanted to learn this process and particularly how Ms. Crouch approached painting her backgrounds. In this workshop we will be painting a hibiscus bloom, focusing primarily on creating an interesting background. A drawing to trace will be provided so we can focus on the painting techniques. Along the way you will make a brush blotter, learn ways of controlling the wetness of your brush, mixing paint on the palette and on the paper, ways to lift color for form and effect, creating soft edges.

Program

kristine allphin brakenhoff

Our program speaker is the well known artist, Kristine Allphin Brakenhoff from Hastings, NE.

Kristine's education and experience in illustration and composition bring an original style, sensitivity, and craftsmanship to her batik work. Although Batik is a challenging medium, Kristine's goal and purpose as an artist are to push the limits to a level of fine art. She utilizes her knowledge of illustration, design and experimentation of non-traditional batik materials to produce many complicated color blends and combinations.

Kristine has won numerous awards and exhibitions including, Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art, Stuhr Museum, Nebraska Art's Council, Fred Simon Gallery, Longwell Museum of Art and the Museum of Nebraska Art. She was featured in Nebraska Life Magazine and the April 2016 issue of Western Art and Architecture Magazine as an Emerging Artist To Watch. Her work has been purchased for use on Hollywood movie sets, corporations, hospitals and private collectors as far away as Canada and Sri Lanka.
